Summer Plans

Posted by prevetclub on April 24, 2012 at 1:45 PM

Is anyone doing any exciting animal or vet related things this summer?! I think we should all share our plans, so we can be excited for each other, and it could give those without plans ideas of what to look for, or ideas of what we would like to do next summer.

At the start of my summer, I'm going to Scotland for a 4 week equine program. I will not only be taking riding lessons, but two college classes: Equine Anatomy & Physiology and Equine Fitness. Sadly, I could not get the credits transferred to Gettysburg, because the classes are not similar to anything we have here, but that's okay, because I can still send the transcript saying I took the classes to vet schools and will learn a ton of cool information! I will be starting a blog when I go with updates on everything I'm doing and interesting things I've learned, so I will post the link to that on here later if anyone is interested in following that. (I added a link for this program in the Resources section if anyone is interested in it for next summer)

Once I get home, I'll be riding along with my equine vet for a few days a week. I might also try to come in a few times to my local small animal hospital, but that has yet to be set up. I also plan on volunteering at my local SPCA and at an amazing thereputic riding organization called Special Equestrians ( - check it out if you live near Warrington, PA!).

My free time will be spent riding my horse, hanging out with friends, and going to the beach. Needless to say, I'm pretty excited about this summer. Just need to get through exams!

Please comment on this and let us all know what your exciting plans are!

I will be spending two weeks in North Carolina at a tiger rescue, then interning with a large animal vet and hopefully shadowing at the small animal hospital... and pet sitting as much as I can for money!

Post graduation, I will be living and working at the North Georgia Zoo in Cleveland, GA for 6 months. It's supposed to be very hands-on, so I will be feeding/cleaning/doing all the various things needed to care for the animals as well as going along on presentations using the exotic animals at schools, clubs, churches, and other organizations. Hopefully, I will have some job offers afterwards or at least a great recommendation and networking connections for another internship.
